This module introduces you to key theoretical debates and approaches to studying technology and society.
As you progress through the module, you will acquire the analytical and critical skills to problematise and investigate how technologies are made in different geographical and societal contexts and how technologies impact and structure social life in different cultures.
The module will introduce you to critical approaches that analyse gender, race and able-ness in and through technology. You will examine politics of technology and deconstruct the charismatic future imaginaries that technologies promise, drawing out connections to nation building, self-hood and management of the present.
The knowledge and skills you acquire throughout the module are assessed in two pieces of coursework: a weekly diary entry and a case study essay. The diary exercise is based on your participation in seminars and understanding of the key readings. You will complete a diary entry every week and submit your 5 best for assessment. The case study essay allows you to investigate technology and society through a case example of your choosing.
