BIO263 MEMBRANE & CELLULAR BIOCHEMISTRY 2023-24
Course Organiser and Lecturer Prof. C.W. Mullineaux
Course Lecturer Dr G.T. Hanke
Lectures – Tuesdays 1-3 pm, Weeks 1-6 and 8-12 in the Drapers’ Lecture Theatre
Video clips where we explain each topic that we cover will be available via the QMplus page, along with quizzes and discussion points to test your understanding. We will use the live lectures for recap and further discussion of the week’s topics, starting with the quiz questions.
Practical Course – Week 7: Fogg 1.01. You will be allocated to 2 sessions from 10-12:30 am or 2-4:30 pm
Each student will attend 2 sessions (2.5 hours each) on membrane processes in mitochondria. The first session will focus on experimental measurements while the second will be a “dry” exercise in data interpretation. Feedback will be given and marks awarded on the spot. You are strongly advised to look at the preparatory material available via the QMplus page ahead of the sessions, and attend the preparation session in Week 6.
Recommended book: Karp’s Cell & Molecular Biology 9th edition (2022) published by John Wiley and Sons. See also other editions of "Cell and Molecular Biology" and “Cell Biology” by Karp, which contain similar material. See the QMplus page for details of how find the e-book from the QMUL library page. The course will refer frequently to this text (although we will also sometimes use material from other sources). The schedule below gives sections from the book that should be consulted in connection with each topic.

Assessment
The course assessment consists of two parts; 1) The written online examination which contributes 75% towards the final grade, 2) the coursework practical report and an associated data interpretation exercise, which contribute 25% towards the final grade. Right at the start of the module we will begin to discuss the exam and what we will look for when we mark it. Please also see the document on learning and exam strategy available on the QMplus page.
